    Aims and objectives

    • Understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning
    • Express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much searching for expressions
    • Use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes
    • Produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing a controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices

    Course structure:

    Listening Module
    The advanced listening module has four main sub-sections.

    • A conversation between two individuals set in an everyday social context
    • A short monologue or speech about everyday topics
    • A conversation with up to four speakers based on academic or course-related situations
    • A university-style lecture or talk 

    Speaking Module
    The advanced level speaking module consists of:

    • Fluency and coherence;
    • Grammatical accuracy;
    • Pronunciation; and
    • Lexical resource.

    Advanced level fluency and coherence will allow to students speak at a normal speed without too much hesitation. It also requires students to place sentences and ideas in a logical order, using cohesive devices (including linking words, pronouns and conjunctions, etc.) to connect sentences together appropriately for improved fluency.

    Advanced level grammatical accuracy improves how accurately and appropriately grammar is used, focusing on all tenses.

    Pronunciation improves the ability to speak in a way which can be understood without much effort.

    Advanced level lexical resource gives the students the words needed to express their meaning in most situations. It also includes the ability to express oneself using alternative vocabulary when finds topics challenging.  

    Reading Module
    Advanced level reading involves reading extended texts with more complex structure and emphasis on descriptive and instructive argumentative texts. Students will need to:

    • draw information and evidence from the course materials and other sources
    • write in their own words, using the vocabulary and expressions relevant to the subject
    • link ideas in a logical way
    • produce sentences in grammatical English with accurate spelling so that the meaning is clear

    Writing Module
    Advanced level writing focuses on writing short texts of at least 150 words. Assignments may include presenting a solution to a problem and justifying an opinion, each with their own organization and layout.

    The students will need to show that they can

    • organise, present and possibly compare data
    • present the solution to a problem
    • present and justify an opinion
    • compare and contrast evidence, opinions and implications
    • evaluate and challenge ideas, evidence or an argument

    Vocabulary
    The students will gain an advanced level of lexical resources for the useful topics, such as; health, environment, transportation and money.

    Upon completion, students will be expected to:

    Create and answer questions related to daily life situations in oral and written form, talk and describe different objects and events, state opinions and arguments for or against a variety of topics, as well as decipher ideas through informational texts.
