    Intermediate Level


    Aims and objectives:

    • Understand the general idea of complex texts for specific topics, as well as technical discussions related to his/her field of study
    • Communicate with a level of fluency that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without too many mistakes
    • Produce clear detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options/opinions

    Course structure:

    Listening Module
    The intermediate listening module has three main sub-sections. The first one is a conversation between two individuals set in an everyday social context. Second is a short monologue or speech about everyday topics. The third involves a conversation with up to four speakers based on academic or a course-related situation(s).

    Speaking Module
    The intermediate level speaking module consists of:

    • Fluency and coherence;
    • Grammatical accuracy;
    • Pronunciation; and
    • Lexical resource.

    Intermediate level fluency and coherence helps students speak at a normal speed (speech tempo) without too much hesitation for most simple sentences.  This level also enables student to put sentences and ideas in a logical, coherent order, using cohesive devices (including linking words, pronouns and conjunctions, etc.) to connect simple sentences together appropriately for improved fluency.

    Intermediate level grammatical accuracy improves how accurately and appropriately grammar is used, focusing mainly on the past tense.

    Pronunciation improves the ability to speak in a way that enables an individual to be understood without too much effort

    Intermediate level lexical resource gives the students the basic words needed to express meaning. It also helps student to express themselves using alternative vocabulary when they may struggle with recalling some specific words.


    Reading Module
    Intermediate level reading teaches students to understand texts relevant to basic linguistic devices in English with tasks mainly about retrieving and providing general factual information.

    Students will:

    • identify the main points in a piece of text
    • select the key information relevant to the task or assignment

    Writing Module
    Intermediate level writing focuses on linking sentences and writing short texts of up to 150 word assignments, and may include letters and describing past events, each with their own organisation and layout.

    The students will need to show that they can

    • organise, present and compare data
    • describe the stages of a process or procedure
    • describe an object, event or sequence of events
    • explain how something works

    Vocabulary
    The students will gain an intermediate level of lexical resources for important topics, such as; health, environment, transportation and money.

    Upon completion, students will be expected to:
    Create and answer common questions related to daily life situations, in oral and written form. Talk and describe different objects and events, as well as picking up and describing situations/events/concepts/ through informational texts.
